Uske Hisse Ka Pyar – review

Uske Hisse Ka Pyar by Ashish Dalal is the debut short story collection by him. Before this, the author has been writing literary features for the newspapers in Hindi and popular Hindi magazines and his creative works (in prose and poetry genre) have been appreciated by the readers as well as the critics known in the field of Hindi literature. Ashish Dalal, in his very debut work, has impressed the readers with his literary vision and plot construction. His short stories fall short to almost nothing and he has been successful in telling the tales of a modern world in a very crafty manner. He does not only impress the readers with his storytelling but also inspires them (or rather pushes them) to read the stories in a continuation. And here, the author has won!

Talking about the short stories, these are all very well-written. From the very first story to the ultimate one in the collection, the author has been witty where he had to be; sarcastic where he should be; cunning where he ought to be and simple that he must be! In short, Ashish Dalal’s Uske Hisse Ka Pyar tells you the stories which reflect modern life as it is; the problems of modern life; the shortcomings in our lifestyle; excessive modernism which could not go well for the elderly people and so on… moreover, there is one dominant factor in almost all his short stories that they are based on the theme called ‘love’. You will find it almost everywhere in his short stories – here, there and there too!

Short stories like Tumhara Hissa, Uske Hisse Ka Pyar, Faisla explore the conjugal dimensions of love – between a husband and wife. These short stories try to convey to us that how important love is for the married people and what connotations it might have. Short stories like Love Marriage, Antim Sanskar etc. explore the parent-child relationship in detail. They try to tell us that somewhere there has been a mistake in our upbringing as a society and we have created a huge gap between the elders and the youths of the day.

All the seventeen short stories by Ashish Dalal tell us that he is a matured author with a distinct vision. He can foresee what could not be seen by most of the authors of the day who only write ‘casual literature’. For the lovers of Hindi writings, Ashish Dalal’s Uske Hisse Ka Pyar is a gem, for sure!
